LIL UZI VERT ALBUM 1920X1080 FULL
On “I Don’t Wanna Break Up,” it’s bizarre hearing someone as self-serious as Future right after Uzi goes full pop-punk on the chorus. If a project from Future and Lil Uzi didn’t spend some time trying to get their exes to fall back in love with them, it wouldn’t be a project from them at all. But even with all this super-charged energy, it’s hard to ignore the moments where Future lags behind, like his unimaginative hook from “Sleeping on the Floor.” They talk about owing money to Elliot Eliantte and buying out stores in Paris as if these were regular occurrences. As the album goes on, their designer lifestyle gets even more animated and expensive. “I push a button, the car drive by itself,” Future immediately fires back. “I push a button my car need no keys,” Uzi says with a carefree shrug. On “Marni on Me,” they trade bars over ominous whistles, trying to one-up the other with uncounterable flexes. What Uzi brings to Pluto x Baby Pluto is a revitalizing energy that makes Future wake up for the first time since The WIZRD. The chaotic tracklist puts producers like WOD’s Brandon Finessin and NeilaWorld’s Lukrative, who first rose to prominence on SoundCloud, on the same album as Atlanta veterans like Zaytoven. The cheery horns and rattling drums of “Bankroll” sound like they were ripped straight from a Stunt Taylor mixtape. Future sounds just as comfortable over the cartoony, electronic Working on Dying production as he does on DJ Esco’s racing melodies. They warmly embrace each other’s production choices on here. However, Pluto x Baby Pluto is more than a slight improvement from their earlier missteps-it’s like watching two friends trade lives for a day. A collab album from Uzi and the man who inspired his Baby Pluto persona felt inevitable after they appeared on each other’s albums, but the disappointing two-pack of “Patek” and “Over Your Head” from this summer left much to be desired. One of the only highlights from High Off Life was the bubbly, Uzi-featuring “ All Bad,” a strange yet welcome breath of fresh air that felt like an Eternal Atake cast-off.

On the other hand, Future’s most recent release was High Off Life, a record in which he sounded nearly asleep, as if operating on autopilot. Uzi’s still hot off Eternal Atake, one of the year’s best rap albums, and its star-studded B-side, LUV vs. He gives an energetic performance over the synth swells and 808 rattle of “Wassup” with Future, and lets 21 Savage take the lead on the Pi’erre Bourne-produced “Yessirskiii.” Young Thug comes through twice, embracing Uzi’s return on the bubblegum trap of “Got the Guap” and then linking with Gunna for the club-crushing “Strawberry Peels.” Closing out the side is the uplifting “Leaders” with NAV, a fitting endpiece from one of his most vocally supportive friends.Future and Lil Uzi Vert might as well be on two different planets right now. Loaded with features by predominantly Atlanta-based rap all-stars, this bonus offering represents a windfall for Uzi’s base while contrasting with the largely guest-free original version. Not to be outdone, for the deluxe edition of* * Eternal Atake he appends an entire new album dubbed LUV vs. An obvious influence on Uzi’s discography, Chief Keef provides the woozy beat for “Chrome Heart Tags,” reminding that there are levels to Uzi’s artistry. He imbues the post-EDM aesthetic of “Celebration Station” and the video-game trap of “Silly Watch” alike with speedy, free-associative verses that run from gun talk to sexual exploits. Without relying on showy features-save for one memorable duet with Syd on the otherworldly “Urgency”-Uzi does more than most of those who’ve jacked his style in the interim. With the wait finally over, the patient listenership that made do with running back 2017’s Luv Is Rage 2 again and again can take in his glittering opus.

For nearly two years, fans eagerly anticipated the release of Eternal Atake, a maddeningly delayed project whose legend grew while tragedy befell some of the Philadelphia native’s emo rap peers, including Lil Peep and XXXTENTACION. One of the most heralded hip-hop artists of his generation, Lil Uzi Vert built no small part of his well-deserved reputation off of the promise of a record nobody had heard.
